Oil Producing Algae Many readers have expressed concern about the massive sewage spill that polluted the western end of Raritan Bay after the Sayreville sewer main ruptured March 2. That was a disaster for clammers whose livelihood was shut down even in Navesink River, which was far from the spill and probably not affected by it.
ULSD was mandated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to be sold at all retail pumps by October of 2006. This new fuel is a reduced sulfur content formula of diesel fuel. Sulfur content went from 50 parts per million (ppm) to 15 ppm in this new fuel. The reduction of sulfur is mandated to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions 2. Do new diesel engines require use of ULSD
Algae Oil Production Fears of finfish being inedible are probably not justified, and crab dredge boats continued to operate. While water quality may suffer for some time, the bay has an ace in the hole in the form of menhaden schools, which should be arriving within the next couple of weeks.

Algae Bio Fuel H. Bruce Franklin, the John Cotton Dana Professor of English and American Studies at Rutgers, is an expert on menhaden. His piece in the Perspective section of last Sunday's Star-Ledger emphasized the importance of menhaden -- known locally as bunkers -- in not only providing forage for many species but also as filter feeders, which help prevent algae blooms resulting from excessive nutrients in the waters.
Fuel for Life Diesel Fuel for Life Him is Fresh, addictive and truly unique. With crisp vibrations of star anise and grapefruit, flashes of raspberry and lavender, and seductive waves of heliotrope and vetiver woods, Diesel "Fuel For Life" must be used with caution.
Algae Fuel Cell Franklin says that with rising temperatures "bacteria from the sewage spill will multiply, the water's oxygen will be depleted, and sewage nutrients may stimulate a devastating algae bloom, leading to fish kills that would escalate the contamination." Yet, nature will provide a gigantic rescue squad in the form of millions of bunkers -- if they aren't quickly eliminated by purse seiners working in the bay with the aid of spotter planes.
Lubricity additives will not be added at the refinery to replace the reduced sulfur content. Some diesel fuel additives do contain lubricity additives. Advance Auto Parts carries Power Service brand diesel additives that contain a proprietary lubricity additive called "Slickdiesel", for maximum fuel lubrication. 5. Customer notices their diesel engine has lost power since the introduction of ULSD. Is this a result of the new fuels
Algae Based Fuels The late Lou Figurelli of Staten Island did more for Raritan Bay than any other individual, and one of his most important triumphs involved eliminating netting on the New York side of the bay, which has resulted in that usually being the only place to obtain bait, and large stripers, after the purse seiners begin working on our side.
Yes, ULSD fuels have a lower BTU value and thus when burned in a diesel engine will result in less power. Cetane enhanced products can offset this power loss. Cetane is a high energy compound that makes the fuel burn more completely in the combustion chamber, resulting in more power, reduced emissions, and improved fuel economy. Power Service diesel additives contain "+ Cetane Boost" to offset this power loss while also improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.
Diesel From Algae Franklin noted there have been many attempts over the years to push the seiners (most of whom are now out-of-staters) out of the bay, though all have been blocked by vested interests. Now he's urging Gov. James E. McGreevey to get involved and have the Department of Environmental Protection take emergency action to prevent the slaughter of those bunker schools, which could restore Raritan Bay to its natural condition.
Green Fuel Algae In another lengthy article on menhaden, Franklin emphasized the importance of those filter feeders by quoting marine biologist Sarah Gottlieb, who likened them to the liver of a bay. "Just as your body needs its liver to filter out toxins, ecosystems also need those natural filters." Overfishing of menhaden is "just like removing your liver -- and you can't survive without a liver."
Algae Fuel Production While the quantities of menhaden appear to be large, they represent only a fraction of what once existed. The colonists saw schools stretching for miles all along the coast from Canada to Florida, and those fish were used to fertilize the fields. A process for extracting their oil was developed in 1850, and that soon replaced whale oil as the primary source of industrial oil.
Bio Diesel From Algae By 1878 there were 56 menhaden processing factories along the coast from Maine to North Carolina. They were fed by a fleet of 279 sailships and 64 large steamships. Yet, the species survived all that pressure until spotter planes came into use after WW II and menhaden no longer had a place to hide. The last truly massive school covered five city blocks from top to bottom in 125 feet off Cape Hatteras. It was wiped out by the ever-more efficient purse seiners.
Biodiesel Fuel From Algae What we see now are menhaden schools hounded throughout much of the year by spotter planes. The schools find temporary refuge in the waters of states that have pushed purse seiners further offshore, where they can still harvest great quantities without destroying the bay forage base and the creatures which maintain a clean ecosystem.
Algae Into Fuel It's time New Jersey provided a modicum of protection to menhaden, which could save our bay and the great striped bass fishery we've enjoyed the past few years.
