Diesel From Algae But the ring of green around the shoreline, be it algae or the seemingly unstoppable aquatic weed called Eurasian milfoil, is there for all to see and dislike, Emmetts included.
Green Fuel Algae "Our family sails," Emmetts said. "We're members of the lake's sailing club. It's difficult to get your sailboat out to the middle of the lake through all the weeds. It's even difficult to paddle a canoe through them at times."
Algae Fuel Production This year, it seemed Mother Nature did her best to undermine the group's efforts. Emmetts said every drop of rain -- and New Jersey had more than its share in 2003 -- carries nitrogen washed from the air. Nitrogen is a nutrient for the plant life that is choking the lake shore.
Bio Diesel From Algae Although nobody wants to go through another drought, Emmetts said there was far less algae in the lake last year, when rainfall was scarce. Despite the Sisyphusian nature of what they do, Emmetts said she and her colleagues are not giving up.
Biodiesel Fuel From Algae Recently, the group was awarded another grant: $65,000 that will fund a U.S. Geological Survey analysis of Neldon's Brook, the main water source for Swartswood Lake. The study might show that fertilizers or other nutrients are washing into the lake via the brook, which could be picking up the material from farms, golf courses or other upstream sources.
Algae Into Fuel What would really help is more monetary support from the state, but association members say Swartswood State Park is in the same financially-strapped boat as other state parks. More money would help the park staff better maintain the aeration system in Swartswood Lake as well as pay for more use of the weed harvester, Szabo said.
Algae Fuel Source Cubitt said part of the problem is the ever-changing nature of lakes. Methods that worked in the past can lose their effectiveness as a lake matures or its surroundings are altered. It's something else that's being studied.
Algae Gas "In some ways, the lake has improved," Emmetts stressed. "Going back a couple of years, with the exception of the algae blooms this year, clarity has improved and the fish habitat has improved. Unfortunately, we've been infested with the milfoil ... It's a rapidly-growing plant that I would say wasn't there 20 years ago."
Fuel From Algae Then there's the tough task of balancing actions with reactions. An improvement in the fish habitat is a good thing, but too many fish can be detrimental.
Algae Diesel "One of the concerns we have is that there are too many alewives and sunfish in the lake," Emmetts said. "They eat the zooplankton."
Bacteria Fuel The bad thing about having fish gorging themselves on the lake's tiny invertebrates is that those little zooplankton are big eaters of the very algae that is now blooming unfettered.
Algae In Diesel To offset that problem, the Paradise Fishing Club this year changed its policy about fish caught by children participating in the club's panfish derby. In the past, the sunnies were tossed back into the lake. This year they went to a food bank that made fish chowder, according to Emmetts.
