Brushing Up On Good Dental Health: Brushing Technique Important in Removing Plaque. algae oil

By Darin Ingels, ND Healthnotes Newswire (August 21, 2003) Brushing your teeth for at least two minutes using moderate pressure with a powered toothbrush effectively reduces plaque buildup on teeth, according to a study in Journal of Clinical Periodontology (2003;30:409 13). The reduction in plaque was observed on outer tooth surfaces, as well as between teeth. Plaque is the whitish-yellow substance that coats the surfaces of teeth and is the primary cause of tooth decay. It is composed of different sugars that accumulate on the teeth, often following meals. Bacteria bind to plaque and begin to cause erosion in the hard, outer tooth surface (the enamel), leading to cavities. Certain foods, especially those containing sucrose, enhance this process. Regular brushing is the single most important factor in preventing cavities. This is the first study to examine different times and amounts of pressure with a powered toothbrush to determine which combination is most effective in eliminating plaque. diesel fuel bacteria

In the study, 12 adults between the ages of 18 and 30 years used a specially modified power toothbrush (Sensiflex 2000) for four different time periods (30, 60, 120, and 180 seconds) and with four different rates of force (75, 150, 225, and 300 grams of pressure), for a total of 16 different combinations. The amount of plaque (plaque index) was measured before and after each of the 16 tests. Participants used no other oral hygiene measures for at least 24 hours prior to their brushing. No serious adverse effects occurred with the power toothbrush, although some participants developed small ulcers in their mouth that resolved within one week with no complications. algae fuel polishing

The reduction in plaque varied significantly with different brushing times and degrees of force. For each time period, the amount of plaque generally decreased by increasing the force of brushing. For example, using a force of 300 grams for 30 seconds reduced plaque more than a force of 150 grams for 30 seconds, even though the time of brushing was the same. Brushing for two minutes, using a moderate amount of pressure (150 grams) appeared to be the optimal method, as it was highly effective at removing plaque and was unlikely to cause damage to the gums. Brushing for longer than two minutes and using more than 150 grams of pressure did not reduce plaque significantly, compared with the other times and amounts of pressure. algae oil biodiesel

The findings of this study are similar to those found in other studies. Dentists generally agree that powered toothbrushes are more effective at reducing plaque than are manual toothbrushes. Using the two-minutes guideline for the whole mouth, 30 seconds of brushing in each quadrant of the mouth would be necessary to achieve the desired results. Selenium Increases Risk of One Type of Skin Cancer A Healthnotes Newswire Opinion By Alan R. Gaby, MD Healthnotes Newswire (December 18, 2003) Individuals with a history of certain types of skin cancer are more likely to have a recurrence of one particular form of skin cancer if they take selenium supplements, according to a report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute (2003; 95:1477 81). While this finding is of concern, the bulk of the evidence still supports the conclusion that selenium is an important anti-cancer nutrient. high oil algae

Three different types of skin cancer occur commonly in humans: melanoma, which is the most serious, can spread throughout the body (metastasize) and is often fatal; two other skin cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, are considered less serious and generally have a good prognosis, unless they are neglected for too long. algae oil extraction

The new study is a follow-up report on a clinical trial that began 20 years ago. In that trial, 1, 312 people with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer (i.e., basal or squamous cell carcinoma) were randomly assigned to receive 200 mcg of selenium per day (in the form of high-selenium yeast) or a placebo for 4.5 years. Compared with the placebo group, the selenium-treated group had a 25% increase in the risk of developing a new squamous cell carcinoma. The incidence of basal cell cancer did not differ between the selenium and placebo groups. extracting oil from algae

Despite this finding, the overall benefits of selenium in this study still appeared to outweigh the risks by a significant amount. As pointed out in an earlier report (Journal of the American Medical Association 1996;276:1957 63), the total number of cancer deaths was 50% lower in the selenium group than in the placebo group. In addition, the total number of cancers (excluding skin cancers) was reduced by 37%; the incidence of lung cancer was reduced by 46%, colorectal cancer by 58%, and prostate cancer by 63%. algae destroyer liquid

Thus, the increased risk of a usually non-fatal skin cancer was more than counterbalanced by a reduction both in cancer-related deaths and in the incidence of other forms of cancer. For that reason, supplementing with selenium still appears to be a reasonable strategy for people interested in preventing cancer. Those with a history of squamous cell carcinoma should be examined frequently for signs of new lesions, especially if they are taking selenium supplements. Some 95 to 98% of squamous cell carcinomas can be cured if they are treated early and have not spread. In addition, because excessive sun exposure is the major cause of squamous cell carcinoma, people at risk of developing the disease should not stay out in the sun too long. liquid algae

Geranium Oil Effective for Post-Shingles Pain By Darin Ingels, ND Healthnotes Newswire (December 18, 2003) People suffering from pain following an outbreak of shingles may get relief by using topical geranium oil (Pelargonium spp.), according to a preliminary study in The American Journal of Medicine (2003;115:586 7). This finding is encouraging for the thousands of individuals who are stricken each year with this difficult-to-treat condition. gas producing bacteria

Shingles is caused by infection with the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. The initial manifestation of shingles is a cluster of painful blisters that appear on an area of the skin, and usually heal within three to ten days. In a significant minority of cases, the skin lesions are followed by chronic and sometimes debilitating pain (post-herpetic neuralgia) around the area that the skin lesions occurred. This chronic pain appears to be due to the persistence of the virus in the root of the nerve that supplies that area of the skin. Shingles develops most often in people with decreased immune function, such as the elderly or those with HIV or cancer. Prescription oral anti-viral medications such as acyclovir (Zovirax, famciclovir (Famvir, or valacyclovir (Valtrex may reduce the pain in some individuals. Topical capsaicin (Zostrix may also provide relief. While these treatments may take days or weeks to be effective, the new study suggests that geranium oil may help in a matter of minutes. bacteria fuel cell

In the new study, 30 adults with post-herpetic neuralgia were assigned to receive one of five topical treatments. The groups received (1) 100% geranium oil, (2) 50% geranium oil in mineral oil, (3) 10% geranium oil in mineral oil, (4) mineral oil only, or (5) 0.025% capsaicin cream. Measurements of spontaneous and evoked pain using a scale of 0 (no pain) to 100 (worst possible pain) were taken at 2, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45, and 60 minutes following application of the respective topical treatment. green fuels algae

Pain was reduced in all participants receiving geranium oil and the degree of pain reduction was proportional to the amount of geranium oil in the topical mixture. Thus, those using 100% geranium oil had greater pain relief than those using 10% geranium oil. All groups receiving geranium oil had significant reductions in spontaneous and evoked pain, compared with those using plain mineral oil. A few minor skin reactions occurred in those using geranium oil, but all reactions resolved within one hour. oil producing algae

Some physicians have reported benefit by giving people with post-herpetic neuralgia injections of vitamin B12 daily or up to several times a week. Oral vitamin B12 does not appear to have the same benefit. Topical peppermint oil (Mentha piperita) or licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) may also be useful. Although the current study is preliminary, topical geranium oil is relatively safe and may provide faster pain relief than other treatments. algae oil production

Soy Extract Does Not Prevent Uterine Thickening By Maureen Williams, ND Healthnotes Newswire (December 18, 2003) A soy extract with protein and isoflavones does not protect postmenopausal women using estrogen from endometrial hyperplasia, according to a new study published in Menopause (2003;10:456 64). algae fuel cell

Moderate Exercise May Reduce Knee Pain By Darin Ingels, ND Healthnotes Newswire (December 19, 2002) People suffering from chronic knee pain may benefit from starting a daily home-based exercise program, according to a new study in British Medical Journal (2002;325:752 6). The findings of this study suggest that following a specific exercise program for the knee may help reduce pain, decrease stiffness, and improve physical function. algae based fuels

Chronic knee pain in adults is often due to osteoarthritis, a progressive degeneration of the cartilage in the knee joint. As the cartilage wears down, inflammation and swelling occur, which lead to pain, joint stiffness, and limited mobility. Conventional treatment is designed to reduce inflammation and pain by taking oral anti-inflammatory or analgesic medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol, ibuprofen (Advil Motrin Nuprin, indomethacin (Indocin, or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. However, taking these medications on a long-term basis may result in a peptic ulcer or liver problems. Some physicians recommend surgery to remove debris in the joint, but arthroscopic surgery has recently been found to be ineffective as a treatment for osteoarthritis. This home-based exercise program may eliminate the need for analgesic or anti-inflammatory medications. diesel from algae

In this two-year study, 600 men and women older than 45 years with knee pain were assigned to one of four treatment groups: (1) daily exercise therapy, consisting of muscle strengthening exercises on both knees for 20 to 30 minutes (2) monthly telephone calls, (3) daily exercise therapy and monthly telephone calls, or (4) no intervention. The therapy performed was a series of knee strengthening exercises using graded elastic bands, starting with low resistance and working up to higher resistance bands. Questionnaires were given at the start of the study and periodically thereafter, to measure pain, stiffness, and physical function. green fuel algae

Compared with the no-exercise groups, the exercise groups experienced a significant improvement in knee pain. Joint stiffness and physical function were also notably improved with exercise. These benefits were seen after six months of treatment and were maintained throughout the study. Improvement in symptoms was associated with the degree of compliance to the exercise program, with those who strictly adhered to the program having the greatest benefit. algae fuel production

Studies have shown that various nutritional supplements, including glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, niacinamide (vitamin B3), S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe), and vitamin E may also be useful in treating knee pain from osteoarthritis. Herbs such as cat s claw (Uncaria tomentosa), devil s claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), ginger (Zingiber officinale), and boswellia (Boswellia serrata) may also be beneficial. Consult a physician or nutritionist for the appropriate amounts to take. bio diesel from algae

Taurine Helps Correct Iron-Deficiency Anemia By Alan R. Gaby, MD Healthnotes Newswire (December 19, 2002) Supplementation with the amino acid taurine enhances the effect of iron therapy in young women with iron-deficiency anemia, according to a report in the European Journal of Haematology (2002;69:236 42). algae fuel source

Taurine occurs naturally in animal foods and is present in fairly large amounts in the body. It functions as an antioxidant and helps stabilize cell membranes. Taurine has been used with some success to treat heart failure, some liver disorders, and certain abnormalities of visual function. algae gas

In this new study, 51 female university students with iron-deficiency anemia were treated with a standard iron preparation for 20 weeks. Half of the women were also given taurine (1, 000 mg per day), while the others received a placebo. By the end of the treatment period, the average blood count (measured as hemoglobin concentration) had increased significantly in both groups. However, the group receiving taurine had a significantly greater increase in blood count than did the placebo group. The advantage of taurine over placebo was equivalent to the production of more than three-quarters of a pint of additional blood. Moreover, body-iron stores were significantly greater in the taurine group than in the placebo group by the end of the study. No adverse effects attributable to taurine were reported. fuel from algae

It is not clear how taurine improved the results of iron therapy. Taurine probably did not have a direct effect on iron absorption, as the two supplements were taken six to eight hours apart. It is possible that taurine, by functioning as an antioxidant and cell-membrane stabilizer, increased the survival time of red blood cells, thereby increasing blood counts. Whatever the explanation for its effect, taurine may be considered for women who have had difficulty correcting iron deficiency by iron supplementation alone. algae diesel

In addition to taurine, other nutritional factors appear to play a role in the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency. Vitamin C increases the absorption of iron, and many doctors recommend that vitamin C be taken at the same time as supplemental iron. Vitamin E and calcium, on the other hand, may interfere with iron absorption if taken at the same time as iron supplements. The main foods that inhibit iron absorption (again, if taken at the same time as the iron) are coffee, tea, and soy products. bacteria fuel

Although iron deficiency is a common problem, particularly among menstruating women, indiscriminate use of iron supplements can be dangerous. A small proportion of the population has a genetic disorder that causes them to accumulate iron, potentially leading to diabetes or severe liver disease if supplemental iron is taken. For this reason, individuals considering iron supplementation should consult a doctor. algae in diesel

Whole Grain Intake Reduces Risk of Type 2 Diabetes in Men By Darin Ingels, ND Healthnotes Newswire (December 19, 2002) Men who consume whole grains as part of their daily diet may reduce their risk of type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes, according to a new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2002;76:535 40). While similar results have been found in women, this is the first study to show that adding whole grains to the diet may prevent type 2 diabetes in men. extract oil from algae

The incidence of type 2 diabetes has increased in the past two decades in the United States. Known risk factors include smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, family history of diabetes, and sedentary lifestyle. Some scientists speculate that consuming a diet high in refined carbohydrates may be an additional risk factor for type 2 diabetes. diesel fuel algae

Questionnaires were sent to 42, 898 male health professionals between the ages of 40 and 75 years. Participants were asked about the frequency and portion sizes of food they consumed during the previous year. Other details, including smoking history, exercise habits, and body weight, were also assessed. Whole grains were defined as brown rice, dark breads, whole-grain ready-to-eat cereals, cooked cereal, popcorn, wheat germ, bran and other whole grains. Refined grains included white rice, white bread, English muffins, pancakes, waffles, cakes, sweet rolls, refined-grain ready-to-eat cereals, muffins, biscuits, and pizza. algae in diesel fuel

People who consumed the highest amount of whole grains (3.2 servings per day) had a 30% to 40% reduction in risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with those who ate less than 1 serving a day. One serving of whole grains is equal to one slice of whole grain bread or cup of cooked brown rice. The decrease in diabetes risk was primarily attributed to the intake of cereals more than the other types of whole grains consumed. algae bio diesel

Among men who consumed large amounts of whole grains, those with a lower body mass index (a measure of obesity) had a more significant decrease in type 2 diabetes risk than did obese men. This suggests that whole-grain consumption may have only a minimal benefit for obese men in decreasing their risk of type 2 diabetes. The benefits of whole grains may be due to their increased content of fiber, which is mostly removed in process of refining whole grains to white flour. However, some studies suggest that the higher amount of magnesium in whole grains also contributes to the lower risk of diabetes. More research is needed to clarify this issue. Intake of refined grains did not increase the risk of type 2 diabetes, regardless of the amount consumed. algae for oil

Whole grain intake may have other health benefits beyond preventing diabetes. Studies have shown that those who consume 2 to 3 servings per day of whole grains have a 25% to 30% lower risk of developing heart disease and a 30% decreased risk of having a stroke, compared with those consuming less than serving a day. However, studies show that the average American diet contains less than 1 serving per day of whole grains. The authors suggest that increasing the intake to 3 servings per day will have a substantial impact on the health of millions of Americans, including preventing type 2 diabetes, one of the most significant health problems of our times. algae to oil
